the activities of the local workshop from the low Middle
Age until the end of the Modern Age. The Museum also
houses a fine collection of ancient ceramics from Italy
and other Mediterranean countries, including decorated
vases from Cyprus, Etruscan black pottery, pottery produced
by the Daun and Italiote tribes in the classical and
Hellenistic periods. Among the most characteristics
events that Montelupo offers in the last week of June
is the International Ceramics Festival, during which
the history and traditions of the town are exalted with
a series of shows, exhibitions and artistic events.
During the year there are also other interesting events,
including the antiques market , local crafts market,
flower and biological products markets. The local School
for professional training of artistic ceramics craftsmen,
in addition of its regular annual courses, holds special
short courses in pottery-making, lasting a week-end
or a week. The local shops supply a broad range of typical
local products such as ceramics and glassware. The third
Sunday of the month is dedicated to an exhibition in
the showroom in Corso Garibaldi entitled "Sunday in
…ceramics: a market of artistic ceramics".

Thanks to its location on
the ancient Roman road that joined Florence to Pisa, and its many
important waterways, Montelupo developed a number of manufacturing
activities, the first of which was artistic ceramics, that reached
their acme in the 15th and 16th century, at which time Montelupo was
one of the major production centers in the entire Mediterranean basin.
Production of terracotta pottery and glass were also important in
the history of the town. An event of particular local significance
was the erection, by the Medici family, of one of their great manor
houses in the 16th century in the adjoining Ambrogiana district on
the left bank of the river Arno. As regards work of art, the most
celebrated work among those found in the area is the "Madonna with
Child and Saints" of Botticelli's school, located in the parish church
of San Giovanni Evangelista.
The Archeological and Ceramic Museum of Montelupo contains archeological
findings from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages, and examples of
local pottery found in the urban diggings. The part reserved for ceramics
presents a vast selection of over 3000 restored examples that belong
