Tuscany - The tradition of ceramics in Sesto
Sesto has maintained its original structure as a farm town immersed in the countryside until the 18th century, when the Ginori ceramic factory was founded and developed, gradually altering the economic and social fabric of the town. Founded in 1737 by the Marquis Carlo Ginori, the Doccia plant, after the inevitable initial difficulties, grew in just a few decades to became a rather large factory (by 1774 it employed over 100 workers). It made pottery and porcelain that was famed throughout Europe for its great artistic value. The traditions of craftsmanship of the production did not change for a long time. The number of employees and of pieces produced increased steadily until the factory had 1,400 employees and a production of 4 million pieces for year. After the company was purchased, in 1896, by the Richard group, its expansion became even more accentuated. The artistic production continued, however, to represent a significant part of the company's activity. During the Art Decò period, Richard Ginori produced works of great artistic value. In the 1920s and 30s the innovative line designed by Gio Ponti imposed new concepts of style in the sector of artistic handicrafts.
