being excavated. The path then ascends steeply to Monte Acuto
and then, to the ridge of the Poggio Uomo di Sasso where
frequently the first patches of snow can be encountered. Path
16, linked to 17 across the ridge (CAI 00), provides a way to
go back down to Reggello
along the ancient layout, which is still partly cobbled, of
the Via Casentinese: this route was once travelled by
sheperds moving their sheep to pastures, in their journey from
the Apennines to the plains of the Maremma. The Valle del Vicano
di Tosi begins on a western slope, between Vallombrosa
and Consuma: this valley may be travelled along the paths which
connect the ancient settlements of Raggioli, Tosi, Magnale,
Pagiano, Paterno, Fontisterni and Sant'Ellero. There, the traveller
can admire mills, country churches, village fortresses, and
farm houses that are unmistakably medieval in design. The large
valley, similar to that of the other Vicano, known as "di
Pelago" or "Altomena", is
perfect for mountain bike excursions in all seasons. These can
be facilitated by taking public transportation to arrive at
the highest points, from which one can descend along forest
roads and paths. |

An entire series of paths
marked out by the CAI cross wide forest zone that covers the pre-Apennine
mountains between the Passo della Consuma (1060 m) and the
peak of the Poggio Uomo di Sasso (1538 m) on the ridge of Pratomagno.
The most advisable approaches are from the Consuma pass or that of
Vallombrosa, which can be reached by means
of a regular coach service. The two localities are linked by several
paths which cross a centuries-old forest consisting of beech, oak
and Douglas trees. At Vallombrosa, a guided
tour of the Arboreti Sperimentali (experimental arboretums) is highly
recommended. These arboretums were developed around the famous
Abbey, and contain splendid examples of trees representing the
flora from half of the world. On the south-eastern slope of Pratomagno,
along the CAI paths 18, 12 and 13 leaving from Saltino,
extends the easy- to reach Foresta di Sant'Antonio, that is also linked
by paths (CAI 14 and 19) to Reggello. From the latter, demanding excursions
can be made as far as the ridge of Pratomagno, confronting gradients
of more than 1,000 m, along CAI paths 16 and 17. The latter includes
a stopover at the Oratorio di Ponticelli and the overlooking Poggio
alla Regina, which houses an important medieval archaeological excavation
site, where an ancient fortified settlement is |
