Tuscany - Reggello
Romanesque hallmark. Built in 1073, with truss roofing, three naves and apse at the back; divided by a series of columns with richly-sculpted capitals, and concluded with two pillars that delineate the rectory. The outside façade is decorated with a 13th-century portico, and on the right a ancient bell tower made of pietra serena, which soars skyward.
The priest’s house contains major works of art, among whichy is an important fragment of Romanesque sculpture, an Annunciation of the 14th-century Florentine School, and a 15th-century wooden Crucifix. Inside there is a triptych** of 1422 that was discovered during the Sixties and was recently restored. It depicts a Madonna and Child and Saints, attributed to Masaccio, and originating from San Giovenale, a short distance from the parish church. It was a work of Masaccio’s “youth” and therefore has extreme importance for the understanding of his entire artistic evolution. In the vicinity, a valuable 15th-century house with a period mill. Excursions from Reggello, along an unasphalted bridle path, in the direction of Pratomagnoare available.
After about 10km, there is the “Reggello Pass”’ at 1337m, and at Croce di Cardeto (1348m), a stimulating panorama**; there are also possible itineraries by mountain-bike (information from “Le Tartarughe del Pratomagno”).

Commune of Reggello
A Commune with an extensive territory, it occupies the part of the Valdarno that penetrates as far as the northwestern slopes of Pratomagno to the borders of Arezzo, and to the Casentino from which it is separated by Monte Secchieta (1449m). It is an ancient settlement, probably Etruscan, as recent excavations would seem to indicate: indeed, the cultivation of vines and olive trees date to Etruscans. It was cited in the year 1000 as Castel Nuovo della Pieve di Cascia. In the 13th-century, it passed under the control of the Florentine Republic, which excecuted its fortification in 1385, which favored the expansion of villages, villas, castles, arid religious edifices, throughout the territory.
With the 1773 reform of Pietro Leopoldo, it became the chief town of the community and was given the name Reggello.Tuscany - Triptych attributed to Masaccio
The present administration dates back to 1840, when the territories of San Clemente and Santa Maria di Sociana were acquired. The settlement is on the “Cassian Way” and on the Etruscan road that used to link Fiesole and Florence with Arezzo known as the “road of the seven bridges” because of the number of rivers crossed: the tributaries flow from Pratomagno into the Arno.
Worth seeing: the parish church of San Pietro a Cascia**, is one of the oldest churches in the district and in among one of the most important buildings with a
