Tuscany - The Florentine football game

Florence was still besieged by the imperial troops.
At the end of 18th century the tradition of Calcio in Costume fell in disuse, only in 1930 the historical manifestation took up again and with new vigour its regular recurrence.

From 1930 three matches are played in june in Florence, on the recurrence of the patron-saint San Giovanni, till few years ago Calcio in Costume were played in Piazza della Signoria, nowadays it has been transferred to Piazza Santa Croce.
For teams representing florentine quarters play the football in Livery:
Santo Spirito white colour
Santa Croce blue colour
Santa Maria Novella red colour
San Giovanni green colour

Every match starts with a wonderful cortege of 530 participants dressed with vintage uniforms starting from the ancient Monastery of S. Maria Novella accompanied by blare and roll of drums and arriving on the play field.
The many coloured procession and the furious game are admired with enthusiasm by Florentine and foreign spectators.

The Florentine football game, or Calcio in Costume, draws its ancient origins from the ballplay in use by the Greeks and later the Romans.
Greeks named this game Sferomachia, and Arpasto was the name used by the Romans.
Young people of noble families and special physical strength were bound to dedicate themselves to this rude game, in order to show, during the play, not only the styliness and sumptuousness of the uniform but also their own strength, and combativeness, rising always the admiration of the attending gentle ladies.
